McDonalds and Burger King: Healthiest Menu Options If You’re In a Pinch

So, I would never say, as most rational adults would probably agree, that fast food is healthy. However, there are ways to make healthy choices at fast food restaurants if you find yourself starving with no better options. Here is a list of the healthiest menu options from McDonald’s and Burger King as reported by nutritionists.

 

McDonald’s

Made with an egg white which saves saturated fat, and very lean canadian bacon, this breakfast sandwich is not too shabby. Including the english muffin and cheese, the total calories are 280 and a whopping 18 g of protein.

 

Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich

With a grilled instead of fried chicken breast, this sandwich keeps the fat content at bay. Also, since it doesn’t have many of the unhealthy toppings that plague other sandwiches, it clocks in at 380 calories and only 7 g of fat.

 

Bacon Ranch Chicken salad

This salad is actually not so bad when all is considered. It’s low in carbs compared to some other menu options. Also to make it even better, swap the ranch dressing for balsamic. This salad is about    calories and

 

Egg McMuffin

The regular Egg McMuffin is actually not a bad breakfast option. At 300 calories and 18 g of protein, it’s a fairly safe meal to get. One benefit of getting the full egg version is that egg yolks contain carotenoids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

 

Cheeseburger

It contains 12 g of protein and 290 calories for a satisfying meal. If you add a side salad instead of fries, you’ll be in good shape. But if you are craving fries, adding a small to your meal will only add 230 calories.

 

Burger King

One great option that BK offers is the veggie burger, which is surprisingly packed with protein at 21 grams; the same amount as a Whopper. It also has 5 grams of fiber as well which is great. The veggie burger has one tenth of the saturated fat of a Whopper though, making it the much healthier option.

This sandwich is a great healthier option with a grilled not fried piece of chicken, with 37 grams of protein. If you skip the mayo, you can significantly cut down on the saturated fat, so opt for mustard instead.

You can’t go wrong with a salad, and the Caesar salad from BK is a good option. Asking for the dressing on the side and using one third to half of it instead of the whole packet helps keep your diet and nutrition on track.

 

Whopper junior

With 10 g of protein, and 10 g of fat, the Whopper junior is a great option. Just forgo the mayo and add a side salad for best nutrition.

 

Alaskan fish sandwich

At just 360 calories, and  9 grams of fat, getting the fish sandwich (without mayo) will not wreck your nutrition plan for the day. Add a side salad and you’ve got a decent meal.

 

Egg and cheese muffin

If you’re stopping into BK for breakfast, one of the better options is their egg and cheese muffin. It has 220 calories and 12  g of protein. Just stay away from the sausage which adds a lot of sodium and fat to the meal.

All said, while fast food is not an ideal healthy meal, it is possible to get tasty and healthy meals at McDonalds and Burger King with a little effort.
